What You Might Be Forgetting

Hidden costs and factors that are easy to overlook but can significantly impact your decision.

Claim variability

A high-claim year can flip which deductible wins — stress-test with higher claims.

Not medical advice

Network coverage and formulary quality matter as much as premiums.

These estimates are for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial advice. Actual results may vary based on factors not captured in this calculator.

How This Calculator Works

What this calculator does

Compare two health insurance plans by combining annual premium with expected out-of-pocket cost after deductible and coinsurance.

How the calculation works

For each plan we apply your expected claims to the deductible, then coinsurance on the remainder, and add the annual premium.

Formula

Total = Premium + min(Claims, Deductible) + max(Claims − Deductible, 0) × Coinsurance%

Example

At €800 claims, Plan A (€250 premium, €500 deductible, 20% coinsurance) vs Plan B (€180 / €1,500 / 20%) shows which path is cheaper for that year.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1
    Enter your numbers

Fill in the inputs for Health Insurance Deductible Calculator. Defaults are realistic starting points — replace them with your actual figures.

  2. 2
    Understand the calculation

For each plan we apply your expected claims to the deductible, then coinsurance on the remainder, and add the annual premium.

  3. 3
    Review results and scenarios

Check metrics, cost breakdown, comparison tables, and best / expected / worst scenarios. Use sliders to stress-test assumptions.

  4. 4
    Decide with the verdict

Read the decision engine recommendation and FAQ. Example: At €800 claims, Plan A (€250 premium, €500 deductible, 20% coinsurance) vs Plan B (€180 / €1,500 / 20%) shows which path is cheaper for that year.

Factors to Consider

  • Network and formulary matter as much as price
  • Stress-test a high-claim year
  • Out-of-pocket maximums can cap bad years
  • Employer contribution changes effective premium

Common Mistakes

  • Comparing premiums only
  • Assuming every year looks average
  • Ignoring coinsurance after the deductible

Frequently Asked Questions

No. This is a financial planning comparison of premiums and cost-sharing. Care quality and coverage rules are separate decisions.

What if claims are unpredictable?+

Re-run with low, typical, and high claim amounts. The cheaper plan often flips when claims rise.
