What You Might Be Forgetting

Hidden costs and factors that are easy to overlook but can significantly impact your decision.

Baggage & Seat Fees

Budget airlines charge extra for checked bags (€20-60 each way) and seat selection. For 2 traveler(s) this can add €160+ to a return trip.

Est. annual
€160
Airport Transfers

Getting to and from airports (taxis, parking, express trains) is easy to forget and often costs €30-100 per trip at each end.

Currency & Card Fees

Foreign transaction fees (1-3%) and poor exchange rates at airports can quietly cost 3-5% of your spending. A fee-free travel card avoids this.

Est. annual
€59
Tips & Service Charges

In many countries tipping 10-20% is expected at restaurants, plus hotel and tour tips. Budget an extra 10% on food and activities.

Est. annual
€102
Mobile Roaming

Data roaming outside your region can be expensive. A local eSIM or travel plan typically costs €5-30 for the trip.

Visas & Entry Fees

Some destinations require visas or tourist taxes (€10-150 per person). Check requirements well before booking.

How This Calculator Works

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the complete cost of a trip — flights, accommodation, food, activities, local transport and insurance — with a contingency buffer, and shows the cost per person and per day.

How the calculation works

We total each category across your travelers and nights, add a percentage buffer for the unexpected, and break the result down per person and per day. We also show budget, comfort and luxury versions by scaling discretionary spending.

Formula

Subtotal = Flights + Accommodation + Food + Activities + Transport + Insurance
Buffer = Subtotal × Buffer%
Total = Subtotal + Buffer
Per Person = Total / Travelers, Per Day = Total / Days

Example

2 people, 7 nights: €500 flights + €770 hotel + €720 food + €300 activities + €160 transport + €70 insurance = €2,520, plus 12% buffer = €2,822 (€1,411 per person).

  2. 2
    Understand the calculation

    We total each category across your travelers and nights, add a percentage buffer for the unexpected, and break the result down per person and per day. We also show budget, comfort and luxury versions by scaling discretionary spending.

  3. 3
    Review results and scenarios

    Check metrics, cost breakdown, comparison tables, and best / expected / worst scenarios. Use sliders to stress-test assumptions.

  4. 4
    Decide with the verdict

    Read the decision engine recommendation and FAQ. Example: 2 people, 7 nights: €500 flights + €770 hotel + €720 food + €300 activities + €160 transport + €70 insurance = €2,520, plus 12% buffer = €2,822 (€1,411 per person).

Factors to Consider

  • Baggage and seat fees on budget airlines
  • Airport transfers at both ends
  • Foreign card and currency exchange fees
  • Tips and service charges
  • A buffer for the unexpected (10-15%)

Common Mistakes

  • Budgeting only flights and hotel
  • Forgetting airport transfers and baggage fees
  • Underestimating daily food and drink spend
  • Ignoring currency and card fees
  • Leaving no contingency buffer

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I budget per day for travel?+

It varies hugely by destination and style. Budget travel might be €50-80/day, mid-range €100-200/day, and luxury €300+/day, excluding flights.

How big should my contingency buffer be?+

A 10-15% buffer covers most surprises — price changes, an extra excursion, or minor emergencies. For remote or long trips, consider 20%.

What travel costs do people forget?+

Airport transfers, baggage fees, tips, foreign transaction fees, mobile roaming or eSIMs, tourist taxes and visas are the usual culprits.
